Posed vs. Poised | Part 1 of 2: A question I asked of myself

What is the difference between the words "posed" and "poised"? “Posed" evokes images of being a fixed and breathless statue, impersonal and cold; and "poised" evokes a relaxed, engaged presence, alive with breath and potential, ready to move in new directions. This subtle shift became a transformative idea to me recently.

During my recent Essentrics retreat in Estes Park, Colorado, I encountered these themes powerfully. The breathtaking mountain backdrop reminded me of the essential bond between humanity and nature. In this environment, I began to explore whether I was operating in a "pose," restricted by my self-doubt or societal expectations, or embracing "poise," grounded in authenticity and openness, grounded in a primal sense of the pulse of life.

The retreat, led by Miranda Esmonde-White and Master Musical Educator, Norm Di Blasio, was a convergence of music, movement, and emotion that fostered a much deeper knowledge and personal healing for me. Norman expertly navigated us through the more technical aspects of music, and Miranda shared her insights on the connection of music to the brain and movement. Surrounded by a diverse group of fellow Essentrics instructors and the majestic beauty of the Rockies, I felt an urge to stretch beyond my limitations, much like Beethoven drawing inspiration from nature.

The dynamic and primal relationship between music and movement, Miranda showed us illuminated paths for both physical and emotional release and recovery. As I embraced her teachings, the line between pose and poise began to blur, leading me to question where I stood in my own life and practice.

Stay tuned for Part B, where I dive deeper into my retreat experience—how Miranda and Norman's teachings connected me deeper to myself and a broader community of Essentrics educators, the impactful moments that led to personal breakthroughs, and how I emerged with a newfound sense of poise, ready to share my journey.
