Exploring Synesthesia: A Vibrant Experience at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures here in Los Angeles, where I was captivated by their incredible exhibit, Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema. This immersive experience allowed me to delve into the dynamic interplay between color and motion in film and sparked reflections on a fascinating phenomenon: synesthesia.
The exhibit featured two interactive areas to explore light and color. In one of these areas, my body refracted the light into primary colors. However, the more intriguing area encouraged a more playful interaction with color and movement, employing an algorithm that reacted to my movements, mirroring and projecting my motion (and emotion) in real-time and creating a beautiful synergy between my gestures and its swirling palettes of color.
This encounter reminds me of the legendary composer Alexander Scriabin, who experienced synesthesia. In his mind, each note sparked a unique hue, blending the senses in a way that few experience. I knew I wanted to edit my video and underscore it with some Scriabin, and I found his haunting Prelude Op. 11, No. 1 as a dazzling example of how he perceived sound as color, and that also illuminated my motion.
To further enhance your experience, I repeat the prelude at the end of the video with Scriabin's score. I invite you to listen along as you explore Sciabin's vibrant world of chromaticism. Let your eyes dance over the notes, and let your imagination run wild as you envision the colors accompanying each note, just as Scriabin did. Please feel free to dance along. As my tagline says, "Just Dance Into It."
Whether you experience synesthesia or not, the connections we forge between our senses can lead us to profound appreciation and joy in art. I left the Academy Museum feeling inspired, as if the boundaries between colors, sounds, and movements had blurred, creating a harmonious symphony that resonated deeply within me.
Enjoy the adventure—let the sounds, colors, and movement flow through you!
